What does ghd stand for? Well this one is nice and easy, although it is a question we are asked frequently.
ghd stands for “good hair day”, and since their launch in 2001, that’s exactly what ghd straighteners have been providing to women all over the world!

The ghd IV styler was released in early 2007 and replaced the popular GHD Mk3. It was originally expected that ghd would release a Mk5, or ghd V styler in 2008, but the new styler never materialised, ghd instead choosing to concentrate on limited edition models of the IV, such as the dark or pure, purple and pink.
It has now been 2 1/2 years since the launch of the ghd IV and there is still no official confirmation from ghd that a ghd Mk5 model is on the way. Certainly the Mk4 was a huge improvement on the already fantastic Mk3, introducing a host of features such as auto shut off, universal voltage and the rounder barrel allowing the owner to create curls and flicks as well as the traditional straight hair. But is there still room for improvement?
Well, like any successful product, there is always scope to add features and improve design. What might these features be? Unfortunately we don’t know yet, but one feature that is missing from the ghd and is present in other leading straighteners, such as the corioliss is a digital temperature control. This would certainly seem a good place to start, but one things for sure those clever people at ghd are sure to pull some new features out of the bag that take us by surprise and take the styler up to another level.
We have a suspicion that there may be news on a ghd V, or ghd Mk5 model very soon, perhaps even in time for Christmas ‘09, so watch this space for more information!
A girl simply can’t live without her ghds, but if you don’t know where to buy them they can be expensive. You will normally find the cheapest ghds online and our ghd price comparison pages are regularly updated with the latest deals from the leading online ghd retailers.
All the merchants featured on our site are ghd approved retailers, so be careful as if you do find cheaper ghds on another site, then there is a good chance that the straighteners will not be genuine. Certainly, at this moment, no genuine retailer will be selling the ghd IV styler for under £90, while the fake sites often sell at between £50 and £70.
Also, look out for deals, as often merchants put in extras like a free thermal protector, or heat mat… sometimes both! This really makes for great value for money as the thermal protectors alone normally retail for £9.95 and we would always recommend using a thermal protector spray before straightening with your ghds to prevent heat damage.
Generally, you will find that ghds are around £15 – £20 cheaper online than when buying from an authorised salon. With some clever shopping and a bit of research you can grab a great bargain when buying a brand new ghd Styler from an approved online retailer.
ghd is of course famous for hair straightening, but did you know that your ghd styler can also create beautiful curls? Here is our guide to curling your hair with your ghd IV Styler.
1) It is important to begin by washing and conditioning your hair, using a shampoo and conditioner made for your hair type. Using a ghd styler on washed hair will produce better curls, that are booth shinier and smoother.
2) After washing, dry your hair by running your fingers through them like a comb and blow drying them at the same time. Drying your hair is important to minimise heat damage from your ghd Styler. Brush thoroughly and apply a heat-protection spray to the hair, which again will help to prevent damage from the ghd Styler.
3) Before beginning to curl, you should separate your hair into five equal parts, which will make it easier to curl your hair using your ghds. Each section of your hair should be tied. Two sections should be taken from the back of your head, two more should be taken from the top of the head, and one separate section should be taken from the crown.
4) Next, the styling. Hold your ghd Styler vertically and take hair from the back of your head, close to the nape of your neck that is 1 inch in width. Clamp your ghd shut on the hair, holding the ends of the section with your other hand. Rotate the Styler by 180 degrees, and move it slowly down the length of hair. Upon reaching the end, unclamp the ghds and release the newly formed curl. Continue this process with all five portions of your hair, saving the portion of hair at the crown for the last.
5) After curling, a small amount of shining serum should be applied gently to your curls. This loosens the curls and gives them a slightly disheveled look, making them look more natural and realistic. To make your curls last longer, spray your hair with hairspray, which will also protect your hair from moisture and humidity.
Notes:
After curling your hair, you are free to play about with your curls, loosening and separating them as you see fit. This can result in a more contemporary look.
The more time you take to perform the steps above, the tighter your curls will be, and the bigger the section of hair you take to be placed inside the ghd, the larger and looser the curl will be. Experiment with different amounts of time and hair taken, to find the perfect look for you.
If you are unhappy with how a certain curl turned out, do not try to redo it immediately. Instead wait for it to cool and repeat step 4.

In the Autumn of each year (normally September), ghd have traditionally launched their limited edition pink stylers. The pink ghds are always incredibly popular and with £10 from every sale going to breast cancer research they also help to support a very worthwhile cause.
Over the years there appears to have been a misconception built up that the pink ghds do not perform as well as the black ghds. We have often been asked the question ‘Are black ghds better than pink ghds?’.
The truth is, just like the ghd Rare, the pink ghds are exactly the same styler as the blacks. Exactly the same specification… just a different colour!
So, it really just comes down to personal taste, do you prefer pink or black? The pinks will normally cost slightly more than the black stylers, but often have extras thrown in, such as the free lip gloss set with 2009’s ghd Kiss Styler. Remember, £10 of the extra money is also going to charity.
You can compare prices of pink ghds from authorised online ghd retailers at our pink ghd price comparison page.
The short answer is no, the long answer is not at all! The ghd Rare styler is simply a limited edition ghd IV Styler with black gloss casing and gold ceramic plates. The differences are purely cosmetic and the Rare has exactly the same technical specification as the standard black ghd IV Styler.
Thrown in with the Rare styler is a free leopard skin heat protection pouch and a snap shut box, so it makes a great gift.
